Masca gorges are a “must to do” especially for hiking enthusiasts. The trail starts from the village of Masca in the mountains and goes down to the beach. You can do this tour with an organised group or by yourself. If you decide to do it yourself, you have to plan a minimum your day especially if you do not want to have to go up the gorges on foot to be able to reach your car.
Here is the easiest way to get to Masca:
-If you are more than 4 people, it is best to park your car near the port of Los Gigantes and take a taxi to Masca. This will cost you around € 23.
-If you are less than 4 people, the cheapest is to take the bus. To do this: – park your car near the post office (correos) of Los Gigantes. We parked in the Lidl parking.
– Take the bus N°325 (8h20 or 10h45) or N°462 (9h30) from the Correos bus station to Santiago del Teide.
-Take the bus N°355 (9h15, 10h15 or 11h) from Santiago del Teide to Masca
Once you arrive at the beach of Masca take the boat to go back to the port of Los Gigantes. You can buy tickets for the boat in the village of Masca or on the beach. There are two companies: one is an express boat and the other stops by the cliffs of Los Gigantes. The boats depart every 30 minutes from 12:00 to 17:30.
It will take 4 hours to do to this hike. The trail is fairly well marked and secure but there are some parts a little bit difficult for inexperienced hikers. The path is most of the time in the sun so take a lot of water with you. The hike is beautiful especially the cliffs that dominate the trail but unfortunately we were a bit disappointed by the beach. Indeed, there is no way to bathe from the rocky beach. To reach the sea it will be necessary to use the ladder, which is located on the platform for the boat.
We loved this hike especially because of the magnificent view it offers. This is definitely a place we would recommend to go if you like to walk.
Following the hike, we went to the beach/village of El Médano. This beach located near Tenerife airport is the perfect place to bathe in family. Indeed, the beach of fine yellow/brown sand is wide with shallow water. Moreover it is known for being a place for stand up paddle, kitesurf …
The village of El Médano is a typical Spanish village. You will find plenty of bars / restaurants and shops and on Friday evenings the village/beach is full of locals. It is a really nice place to visit. We enjoyed so much the atmosphere of El Medano that we went back the next day for a lunch before heading out to the airport. We also think it is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
