Oh Scotland, magnificent and magical Scotland, you won our heart.
As the Scottish poet Robert Burns said: “ The birth-place of valour, the country of worth; wherever I wander, wherever I rove, The hills of the Highlands for ever I love”
I’m sure you realise that we fell in love with this country. The majestic pine forests, the peaceful and impressive lochs, the spectacular view on the sea and surrounding islands, the palette of green prairies, the feeling of being alone in the world and the excellent Scottish cuisine got the better of us.
Why do we advise you to visit Scotland?
-To disconnect from the world; leave your mobile phone, Internet, emails (anyway most of the time there is no network) in the hotel room and enjoy the nature in its entirety and relax.
-For the whisky connoisseurs, they will have an abundance of choices. For those spoilt for choice, there are several organised trips that visit a selection of different distilleries.
-The nature lovers and hiking lovers will be more than satisfied. The walkhighlands website references a multitude of hikes in Scotland.
-To go camping. In Scotland you are allowed to pitch your tent on the shore of a loch.
-To practice water sports, you can go sailing and kayaking on the many lochs, and even take a ferry to visit different islands.
Where to eat?
We tried some restaurants and found them so good that we think they deserve to be shared.
Craobh Haven Lochgilphead PA31 8UA
This restaurant / pub at the end of the Craobh Haven’s harbour offers delicious dishes with fish / shellfish / crustaceans. Also lamb and vegetarian dishes are on the menu. The “local king scallops” and “hot prawns” were just excellent.
– The Cottage Restaurant
Church Square, Inveraray, PA32 8TX
This little restaurant hidden in a corner of a street in the centre of Inveraray is just wonderful. The waitresses were very nice, the food was good and tasty and everything for a reasonable price.
We have visited Scotland twice and hope to return soon. Between showers, because it rains a lot in Scotland (even in August), we visited some gorgeous locations:
- Circular Hike to Crinan. Very nice walk of about 2h overlooking the islands of Jura and Islay.
- a weekend in Edinburgh (upcoming article)
- Visit to Crarae Garden (upcoming article)
We hope these articles have given you the desire to visit the lovely country that is Scotland.
